TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME The bell had finally gone off, letting a wave of relief pass through the classrooms. Many rushed to their next class while other students hung out in the hallways. Mia found herself involved in her own affairs, leaving her class she headed straight to her locker. There was no need to carry a full load of books around all day, all she had left was her free period, English, and then Glee club. She had already decided that she would use her free period to work on song for Glee club, already she had put it off far too long. Her nerves were acting up again but she couldn’t let that stop her, Mia at least had a few song ideas in mind. They were all mellow and she could play her guitar, and that would keep her focus. The last thing she needed was to be distracted by all her other classmates and freeze up. She was Mia, well known student and a Cheerio. She couldn’t have people laughing at her.
She needed to stop thinking that way, she had been drowning in all this self-doubt lately but with good reason. In her mind so many things were wrong and she felt as though she was responsible for fixing them again. It was a lot of weight to carry on her shoulders but she managed to do so with grace. At least it hadn’t seemed like she was acting unusual. Mia was pretty good about hiding things, like her feeling towards Sue yelling at the girls all the time. But around her you had to learn fast to just move on and accept her insults otherwise you’d run off the field crying. That happened once to a girl a try outs, Mia felt terrible but there was no way Sue would let her leave to go and comfort her. She was one of the nicer cheerleaders on her squad, and Mia knew that she stuck out horribly. She didn’t have the same makings as Quinn, or Santana. They just had a way of dominating everything.
Well maybe that was her once upon a time, but she’d changed a lot since freshmen year. She was sick of pretending to be someone she hated. It wasn’t like her to be mean; then again they had all gotten a little better. Mia was the only one with a drastic change from that girl, to the kind and sincere one. It was weird to think of how much time had really passed.
Mia walked out onto the football field carrying a book, a piece of paper, and of course a pencil. She liked to read out here and let song ideas just spring up on her. And what better way to do both than by watching the football team. The last time she’d had a boyfriend was at the end of freshmen year but that hadn’t gone over to well. While she had her crushes, and flirtatious moments Mia was just not good at that type of thing. It was better to keep her distance and her mind somewhere else. On the other hand it always drove her mother crazy. Crawling up into the bleachers Mia found a spot and sound down. “Nothing like a football team and nice weather to start off the day.” She leaned forwards watching them for a few minutes, then she promised herself she would get right on her assignment.

The school bell rang through the hallways, bringing Quinn Fabray back from the daze she had fallen into out of boredom about ten minutes ago. Shutting her textbook rather loudly and gathering up her things, she quickly hopped off her lab stool and headed to the door. Once she was in the safety of the crowded hallway, she flipped her long blonde hair over her shoulder and started making her way to her locker. She had gone all day so far without getting a slushie facial, so she was hoping that it would stay that way. It was pretty pathetic when one cringed at the sight of certain people who used to never really matter, but Quinn was doing her best not to let it bother her. So far the day had been fine, and she was sure it would continue to be as long as she didn’t have to sit through another boring Biology class. Thankfully that was over until tomorrow, and she had time to wake up and recover from her intense boredom now that she had a free period. Her plan was to go outside and enjoy the weather while it was still nice out, and since she had completed most of her work in classes already she was more or less free to do that.
Once she got to her locker the cheerleader twirled her lock, opened the door and dropped her books inside since she didn’t need them again until after free period was over. After that, all she had to get through was Psychology, then it would be time for Glee Club and she could work on her song. Once her locker door was shut and secure, Quinn slowly started making her way to the door of the school that lead out to the football field. The football team had been called out early for practise since they had a game coming up soon, so she decided to go and be the supportive girlfriend and watch Sam practise. He really was a great guy and Quinn was glad that she had finally decided to give him a chance. After her past relationship history she had been extremely hesitant, especially since he had a tendency to be a bit dorky but after their dinner at Breadsticks she’d realized that it was actually cute. Plus, he treated her well and she didn’t have to worry about arguing with him about Rachel Berry the way she had with Finn. That was one of the reasons that she and Finn had broken up, besides the fact she had unintentionally cheated on him with Puck and ended up getting pregnant. She still felt guilty about that entire thing but it didn’t matter now since they had both moved on and were happy – or, at least Quinn was.
As she crossed the parking lot and moved towards the field, she saw a familiar figure sitting there watching the boys. Mia Landon was a fellow Glee Club member and Cheerio, and though Quinn wasn’t exactly close to her, the girl wasn’t that bad to talk to. Plus, having some company was never a bad thing and she didn’t mind Mia’s presence most of the time. At least she wasn’t annoying and self-centered like certain other brunettes in Glee. With ease, Quinn walked to the stairs leading up to the bleachers where Mia was sitting and she carefully made her way over to the girl. She had a piece of paper and a pencil in her hand and Quinn wondered briefly if joining her was a good idea; she didn’t want to interrupt her if she was doing homework or something, but once she saw the girl lean forward and train her eyes to the boys on the field, Quinn figured it was alright and took a seat next to her. “Enjoying the view?” she asked when she was seated, following Mia’s gaze and trying to find Sam on the field. TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME The last thing she had expected was company, not many students ended up out on the bleachers. They usually had better things to do, but it was the perfect place to watch the boys practice. She found herself constantly watching them with fascination as though Mia was drawn to them. But it made her sick all at the same time. Maybe she was just like her mother, but there was no way on this earth that she could be like her. Some nights she’d dream about wasting her life away just like them, stuck with a jock. In high school everyone would look upon them in awe, but once school was out for good she’d leave a life of misery. Mia hated those nights when the dreams plagued her, as though taunting her with some future she didn’t want. No, she wouldn’t let that be her destiny. She could make her own choices, but still. Her eyes glanced down watching them run around like ants, why did they all have to look like that?
Each of them inviting and nice in their own way, but she knew that kindness was only there because of what she was, a cheerleader. Then again she supposed Sam and Finn were actually genuine guys, or so they seemed to be. Sure at first they had been complete jerks, but since Glee club they too had made small changes. But they already belonged to someone else, maybe Mia’s nightmares were trying to tell her something, like she’d never be happy. Just look at Quinn, she had it all a life that Mia would’ve accepted. Even Rachel seemed to have everything she needed, sure there was drama but they had easier lives. If school and boys were the only thing they needed to worry about, well they had it made. She wished she could be them for a day, live in a world of having fun and a few tears every now and then.
Mia was suddenly pulled from her thoughts when she heard a familiar voice, it belonged to Quinn. She could place it anywhere. Turning she looked up and nodded, “yeah.” She gave a small laugh, “you could say that. What are you doing out here?” She didn’t know Quinn too well but they seemed to get along. She could never place a time when Quinn had ever been particularly mean to her. Mia knew she was really nice but still warming up to many of their classmates, especially Rachel. There had been many conflicts between the two of them, but she never got involved. Mia more or less did her own thing. “Then she looked down at her blank piece of paper, “I’m trying to figure out a song for Glee club. I didn’t think it would be this hard. Doesn’t make it easy when you have a nice distraction.” Her eyes motioned towards the field. Mia moved over on the bench so that Quinn could sit down if she wanted, “I guess you already know all about that.” She was speaking of Sam, she could already tell that Quinn was looking for him out on the field. Mia had only spotted Finn though.

It was still Spring right now, which was why Quinn was spending as much time outside as possible. Once winter hit, there would be no way that she would be out there as often because she hated the cold; plus, the Cheerios uniforms weren’t nearly as cute in cold weather. She didn’t spend as much time in that uniform as she once had because she liked her normal clothes too, but she still loved that uniform and how it made her look. To her it was a sign of popularity and power and for the few months that she’d had it taken away from her last year she had more or less gone insane. Popularity wasn’t everything to her the way it had once been, but her self-esteem and image issues prevented her from forgetting about it entirely. Those humiliating junior high years still haunted her despite her efforts to make herself into someone who would never have to deal with that again, so she was relieved when Sue let her back onto the squad. Of course, being in Glee club didn’t give her back her entire level of popularity but it was enough that her life had more or less gone back to normal. This year was going to be about her, and she didn’t care who didn’t like that.
Ironically enough, however, that was what she had said to Sam before they started going out and he’d tried to kiss her. But, despite finally admitting her feelings for him and starting to date him, she did still want to make that year about her. All of last year her life had been guided by her pregnancy and her guilt about what she’d done to Finn. This year, she was thin and pretty again, back to being Cheerio captain, and had good grades. Life was more or less going her way again, and now she had an amazing boyfriend to bring it all together nicely. It was still a fairly new relationship, but she could honestly say that she was happy. Sam was a great guy and she kicked herself for being so hesitant with him before. But, then again, she’d had good reason to be hesitant because she was trying to make that year about her. It wasn’t until their dinner at Breadsticks that she had realized that she could still make that year about her and still have a boyfriend. And this time, she was determined not to get drunk around any player types like Puck and get herself knocked up again. She was also never going to let her judgment be so impaired that she ended up cheating on her boyfriend again as long as she could help it. Part of that was going to be not to voluntarily put herself into a situation where she might be tempted; she was determined to stay faithful this time because she wanted it to work with Sam.
Quinn watched as Mia turned to face her with a nod of her head before turning back to the field. It was clear that the girl was enjoying watching the boys running around down there, and there was nothing wrong with that as long as she wasn’t watching Sam. The blonde did not take other girls looking at her guy very well because she still had such a low self-esteem that she always feared he would leave her. It had been a problem with Finn, particularly when Rachel had come into the picture and he started spending a lot of time with her. But, Quinn was amazing at hiding her inner issues and always managed to walk around with a strong, confident and uncaring façade. “Same thing you are,” she said with a shrug, responding to the girl’s question. “I had a free period so I decided to come be a supportive girlfriend and watch the football practise.” She smiled as she caught sight of Sam, then turned back to Mia. “Yeah, distractions definitely don’t help,” she agreed, following her fellow Cheerio’s gaze. “Which one are you out here watching anyway?” She asked it more out of curiosity than anything, but she strongly hoped that the answer wasn’t Sam. TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME A new song idea appeared in her mind and Mia quickly wrote it down on the piece of paper she had folded several times over. The letters curled over one another in her known cursive, something that she had prided herself in being able to do. She liked to practice drawing the letters in Spanish on days that she couldn’t focus on school work. It was now the third song she had written down, but more ideas kept falling on her. Maybe she was just in the right mood, it was impossible to be upset when watching the football team below. Mia could watch them for hours and get lost in the game, it was a good thing she had become a cheerleader afterall. Though she secretly wondered what most people thought about her seeing as how she also spent most of her time in ND. They each carried their own feeling and she truly lived for these individual moments. Frowning, Mia looked down at her paper knowing it would be a tough decision in the end. It would just be easier to go with the song that was the least likely to make her look like a complete fool in front of everyone.
Then she turned to Quinn and smiled, she was a pretty girl like her but had all the extra things in life that she sometimes dreamed of. Of course she knew the cheerleader had gone through her own rough patch with having a baby, but Mia thought that she even handled that with grace. There was no way she would’ve been able to handle that sort of situation, not to mention her parents would make it a living hell. They wouldn’t kick her out, no they would just spend every second of the day making sure that she knew how much of a failure she was. But Mia had already won that when she joined ND, so it didn’t matter in the end what she went through. There was no making her parents happy, even for a minute. Biting her lip, Mia had to push these thoughts away. She was at school now and having a good time, and now Quinn was here. Mia had wondered if she was going to be singing in class soon. There were still a few of them that had yet to select a song, and she was eager to see what everyone else was going with.
“Yeah, it’s always nice to get a break from class. For some reason lunch breaks just don’t cut it for me. It’s all the noise and those freshmen wandering about.” Mia laughed, “god I remember when I was that small and nothing at the time.” She wasn’t sure how Quinn had felt in her first year, but the girl had worked her way up the High School chain in no time at all, like she was born to take on this place or something. “Well in any case Sam’s really lucky to have someone who’s so supportive. The team is especially going to need it this year.” All the other schools had been training hard, which meant that their own team would have to push themselves even further. Mia turned her gaze back and could feel her face heat up. Usually when this happened she turned a light shade of pink. Her eyes looked down towards the field as if trying to pin a face to a name, “I guess all of them. They are all pretty cute, like Finn and Sam.” Then she realized what she had said and felt guilty of some crime.
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have said that. “ She pushed her a strand of dark hair behind her ear. “I didn’t mean it like that. Just that they are really nice. You’re really lucky Quinn. I’m not exactly dating material anyways.” It was weird to say that to someone like Quinn. She didn’t even know her and yet that small piece of information had slipped out so easily. It almost made her feel silly.

Silence had fallen between the two cheerleaders and Quinn watched as Mia’s pen worked over the slightly crumpled paper in her lap. When she’d arrived, Mia had informed her that she was trying to think of songs for Glee but hadn’t come up with anything yet. Now, however, that seemed to have changed as her friend seemed to have gained some inspiration. Quinn had more or less figured out her own songs and now it was a matter of actually practising them, but she had to find some time to do it first. She usually liked to go to the auditorium and practise so that she’d be less nervous in front of the club but today she just didn’t feel like going in there. Plus, she was pretty sure that she would have found Rachel in there practising even though she didn’t really have too. She would never admit it to anyone, but Quinn sometimes envied how easily singing came to Rachel, but she didn’t like how the girl always flaunted that in everyone’s face. She didn’t know how to be a team player and wasn’t happy unless she had the spotlight on her all the time, but Quinn still envied her talent. However, that was the result of singing and dancing since childhood in Rachel’s case, where Quinn had only just started doing it in public. Before, she had been too preoccupied being the popular head cheerleader and though she had a passion for singing and dancing, she’d never really used them outside her room until Sue had made her join Glee to spy on Mr. Schuester. Now, she was as dedicated to the club as she was to the Cheerios.
Once Mia had finished writing, she looked back at Quinn and Quinn gave her a small smile. Mia was actually a pretty cool person, but she lacked the confidence and outgoing nature that most of the Cheerios had. She was, however, pretty flexible and good with their cheerleading routines so she had made it onto the team. Quinn had to admit that when the girl had first tried out, she didn’t think she would last long because most people couldn’t handle Coach Sylvester and her criticisms but Mia had surprised her and stuck to it. It was nice to see that not everyone was too intimidated by the coach, since Quinn knew from personal experience how hard the woman could be on the team if something wasn’t exactly how she wanted it to be. That was where the whole spying on the Glee club mission had streamed from, and though Quinn hadn’t agreed to bringing down another club to get the Cheerios a bigger budget now, she had back then because the Cheerios were her ticket to ultimate popularity.
“It definitely is,” she said with a nod, agreeing fully that a break from class was nice – especially with everything going on in her life right now. “God, I look at the freshmen and wonder if I was like that when I was one,” she said with a small laugh. Freshman year was kind of a blur to her nowadays, but she was pretty sure she hadn’t been as slow, anxious, or irritating as the current bunch of freshman. There were a few who seemed alright but most of them wandered around in a complete daze, which was actually kind of amusing sometimes. “Thanks, I’m trying to be. They’re doing a lot better with Beist as their coach but every bit of support still helps,” she responded, happy to know that someone saw that she was being a good girlfriend. She followed Mia’s gaze back to the field, waiting to hear which of the players her friend was watching and smiling to herself when she saw the girl’s face get a bit pink. At the mention of Sam and Finn, Quinn tensed up a bit, but didn’t say anything that would make her sound like a bitch. After all, there was no harm in other girls looking at her ex-boyfriend and current boyfriend, though it did make her a bit jealous. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, they are,” she nodded in agreement. She noticed at that moment that Mia’s face had adopted a guilty look. “Don’t worry about it. It’s not like I’m going to go psycho on you for looking at my boyfriend. Most girls around here do,” she said with a shrug. “They are nice, you’re right. Nicer than I think I deserve sometimes.” She still felt horrible for what she’d done to Finn last year, and because of that she felt like she didn’t deserve someone like Sam. “Who says you’re not, Mia? You’re a Cheerio and you’re smart, nice and pretty. That sounds like good dating material to me.” It was her attempt to make the girl feel better, but she wasn’t sure how effective that would be. TELL ME THAT YOU'VE GOT EVERYTHING YOU WANT&& Y O U R B I R D C A N S I N GBUT YOU DON'T GET ME, YOU DON'T GET ME She had never realized just how much they had in common before, but then again Mia had never really tried talking to her. The girl could be intimidating, seeing as how she practically ran the team. It seemed like it would only be natural to just blend right in as though she was right at home. Never did Mia think that Quinn would dwell on what she was like as a freshman. Mia probably had guessed she was perfect even then, she could have the world handed to her Sometimes Mia wondered why so many people talked crap about her behind closed doors. Usually that meant the bathroom stalls near the locker rooms. But she had been there enough times to know that the cheerios weren’t everyone’s favorite school celebrities. They had a bad rep, but drama was a common thing at this school, it didn’t make them bad. Okay, she hadn’t been particularly nice in her first years starting out but that was a given. And Quinn probably knew how she used to be, they had been cheering together for some time now. “I’m sure you weren’t. Seems like our class literally ruled the campus even from the beginning. And somehow we all ended up in Glee. Even Sam moved up quick as a transfer. Still…” she thought of the giggling freshmen, and the boys who tried to hit on the juniors and seniors. “It still makes me wonder…”
Mia did feel different, she was a lot taller and had a new style. It was something that matched who she was, in the past years she’d tried bangs and other looks. Nothing fit her, but now she dressed in the best way that made her feel comfortable. She laughed along with Quinn, feeling as though it were a sudden release. That was in the past and here she was now sitting in the bleachers. “Yeah…even though she had a rough start, she’s improved the team by a lot. We needed someone like her a long time ago. Now we actually win.” And as a cheerleader it felt good to be on the winning side. For a while now they had been on the receiving end of bad jokes. What good was dancing and throwing around comments when all they did was lose? A new confidence had definitely brought on a new school spirit. More people showed up at the games, and people looked upon them in awe during competitions. Their uniforms had never looked better.
There was plenty of relief following what Quinn had said, Mia was not the type of girl who got involved in relationships that were not her own. It had happened a few times on their team, cheerios always seemed to have the same crush. But she’d never take it that far. She wouldn’t even flirt with them knowing they belonged to someone else. There was enough guilt stored up for a lifetime there was no need to add onto that. “Well if it helps…I here Dalton has a few nice looking students too.” At this she smiled trying to lighten the mood. Mia had already picked up on Quinn’s slight discomfort and she would do anything to push that aside. “Hey…you do deserve someone as nice as Sam. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Besides…I bet he feels like he doesn’t deserve you.” There had been a few complications between Finn and Sam, Mia had been witness to that. But things happened like that in high school. Blushing she pressed her hand against her face, “thanks Quinn that means a lot. But sometimes I feel like…I’d…ruin a perfectly good relationship.” It was her fear doing that, maybe one day she would learn to not let it control her. Or maybe…Mia would find someone that she didn’t want to run away from. lyrics your bird can sing by the beatles notes Word count: 637 credits this was made by brooke !

Quinn knew that she seemed intimidating simply because of her position on the social ladder, but she wasn’t really. She could be a bitch if she wanted to be or was provoked, but most of the time she was a nice person. Of course, if your name was Rachel Berry or Alexandra Ryleigh then you didn’t get to see her nice side, but everyone else did most of the time. She had Sam to thank for her nicer, gentler personality because she genuinely felt that she had to be a better person for him. Mia wasn’t really someone she went out of her way to talk to but since the girl was currently sitting in the bleachers with her, it would have been rude to ignore her. Quinn was actually finding that the fellow Cheerio was actually not that bad to have as company, and was finding that they actually had a lot more in common than she’d originally thought. Mia hadn’t really seemed like the kind of girl who would join the Cheerios but Quinn had been wrong about that, and was now glad that she was wrong. Her fellow junior was actually a nice addition to the team, and Quinn had decided to make talking to her in and out of practise a more frequent occurrence. “Actually, I think you’re right. Even though we aren’t everyone’s favourite people in the school, we’ve still kind of ruled it from day one,” she responded, thinking back to those times. “Well, us being in Glee just makes it seem that much better I guess,” she said with a smile. “It’s actually not as bad as I thought it would be.” Quinn didn’t feel like anything had changed since freshman year until she had gotten pregnant last year, which made her realize that she had. She was still thin, blonde and pretty, but she was also a lot nicer to people and wasn’t as concerned about her social standing. She had even gone from the top of the social ladder to the bottom for a few months, but that was back to normal again. So, it was really like life hadn’t changed a whole lot even though it had. Another new part of her life was her boyfriend. For a few years it had been Finn, and though she had still stuck to guys on the football team, it was now Sam. Both were quarterbacks and didn’t get the best grades in school, and both were sweet and nice. But, there were big differences between them that Quinn was noticing as her relationship with Sam progressed, with the main thing being her own personality. Thinking back on her relationship with Finn, she had been a controlling bitch who prided herself on putting others down. She really was ashamed to remember herself that way, but it was true. Now, with Sam, that had all changed. She wasn’t sure if it was because of the guy she was with, or if it was just because her pregnancy had slapped her in the face and made her want to change, but either way she had. “We really did need her. She’s tough but she’s not lazy, and she really knows what she’s doing. She’s probably the best thing that happened to the guys,” Quinn said with a smile. It was great to see more people coming to the games now that they actually won, which also helped make the cheerleaders’ hard work worth it. Before, it really seemed pointless to have the Cheerios there because there wasn’t much of a crowd to work with and their pep didn’t help the team in the least. Now, that opinion had changed and people were a lot more supportive. “Oh, do they?” Quinn asked with interest. “Is there someone there you’ve got your eye on or something?” she teased, nudging Mia’s arm lightly. At least now she was smiling, which was telling Quinn that there might possibly be a guy her friend was interested in. “I hope he doesn’t feel like he is, because he’s perfect for me,” she responded, smiling widely at the mention of her boyfriend. Sam really was as perfect for her in every way. “Aw, Mia. I doubt that. Don’t be so hard on yourself!” Quinn’s new mission was now to prove to her friend that she would definitely not fail in a relationship, and she would help her through it if she ever needed it.
