a dream is a wish yourheart makes when you're fast asleep
It was one of those days where Quinn wanted nothing more than to go home and curl up in bed. She hadn’t slept well the previous night for some reason, and it was really taking a toll on her now. She had made it through her morning classes and had just got back from getting lunch at Starbucks. Coffee was a definite necessity if she was going to be able to make it through the rest of the day, especially since one of her most boring classes was next. She did, however, still have time left on her lunch and was planning to take full advantage of that. She had no idea where Sam was so spending time with him was currently out the question, which left her with trying to find something else to do. She debated going to the auditorium to practise a song for Glee Club since it would most likely be empty, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to do that. She had been rehearsing a lot the last few days and wasn’t sure if her voice could handle doing more of it, especially since she had to keep it up for Cheerios practise after school. The last thing that Coach Sylvester would want would be her Captain sounding hoarse while cheering. Quinn seriously doubted that practising her singing would seriously affect her voice since she knew how to prevent strain, but it wasn’t really a chance she was willing to take. She had, after all, just got back onto the Cheerios and didn’t want to be kicked off again for something small.
So, Quinn decided to go and relax in the student lounge for the remainder of her time. Most people wouldn’t be in there since it was only lunch period for the juniors and seniors so it would be nice and quiet. After the day she’d been having, quiet was definitely something the seventeen year old needed. She’d thankfully gotten over the minor headache she had when she got up that morning, but she had been in big crowds all day and just wanted some time to herself. She had a few chapters to read for History class, and decided to do that now so she could just go home after Cheerios practise and not have to worry about it. What she really needed was a day where she had no commitments and could just relax, but with sectionals for both Glee Club and cheerleading just around the corner, that wasn’t exactly an option at the moment. Couple them with her other school work and Quinn Fabray was one busy teenager. Once Sectionals were over things would slow down a bit, but until then it was more or less chaotic and hectic. She didn’t mind it, however, since she loved both the Cheerios and the Glee Club and didn’t mind putting in such hard work to win. Winning meant respect and popularity, which Quinn craved like ice cream on a hot summer day. It would also mean an end to the stupid slushy facials and Karofsky bullying the other members of Glee. She really, really hated that guy.
As she walked down the mostly empty hallway towards the lounge, she tried to get herself in the right state of mind to read her History chapters. It wasn’t particularly interesting, but most of the time she enjoyed the class so hopefully the chapters wouldn’t be too dry. Her plan was to read, and if it got too boring she would close the book and just hang out in silence in the lounge. She was sure that Sam would come and find her eventually, but until then she was determined to do something productive to make her word load lighter. Once she got to the lounge, she was pleased to see that there was nobody else in there and she strode through the door, dropping into a chair closer to the back of the large, comfortable room. Once she was comfortable, she opened her textbook, got out a notebook and pen and started to read.

- - - - - - - - - - Finn was bored and tired, ridiculously so, and it made attempting to pay attention extremely hard. Typically, he didn't pay attention in class anyway, but for the most part, he had mastered the ability of staring at teachers intently as if he was really listening. He'd occasionally furrow his brows in confusion to deter teachers from actually calling on him too. It was all fool proof, or well, as fool proof as a plan of his could be. Regardless, that day, Finn couldn't even manage that much. And his history teacher had called on him in class and the way he spluttered for an answer made a Karovsky and a few others taunt him. Whatever. Finn was pretty sure neither of them knew who Catherine the Giant (was that her name?) was either. So the moment his morning classes ended, he quickly made his way to the cafeteria to eat lunch, hoping he'd be able to coax a lunch lady to give him extra tots or something. Tater tots would make him feel a little better at least.
Only, Mercedes was pretty much monopolizing the tater tots for herself, causing him to stand in line for longer than he would have liked. Regardless, he got his damn tots, and was pleased to find that the lunch lady gave him enough to overflow onto his tray a little. But lunch was as eventful as ever (seriously... an emo kid got mashed potatoes shoved down the front of his pants!), and despite things occurring around him, Finn found himself zoning out tremendously, occasionally popping a tot into his mouth in a robotic fashion. He received a few strange looks, but seriously... he just didn't care enough to actually smile goofily and shrug his shoulders like usual. Instead, he stood up from the table, moved to throw away his trash and put his tray away, before stepping out of the cafeteria. He was simply not in the right state of mind and he couldn't really pinpoint a reason for it.
Maybe he was stressing out? It made sense if he was seeing as how there were a crap ton of things burdening him at the moment. There wasn’t really anyone he could talk to about them either. Not that he’d really want to burden anyone else like that... no, he preferred just keeping all of those things to himself. And he didn't really want to see Rachel simply because Finn was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to even pretend to listen to her... and he really didn't want to make her upset. With Rachel, it wasn't really a matter of making her mad as much as it being a matter of making her cry. It had been different with Quinn -- she'd just get pissed and turn into scary Quinn. She’d just call him stupid while Rachel would mumble something showcasing her insecurities and make Finn feel like an ass. Actually, both of them managed to do that yet they were both so differen-- wait, why was he even thinking about Quinn? Finn groaned, lifting both palms to press against his temples as he trudged his way toward the students lounge, mumbling Rachel’s name like a mantra under his breath.
Perhaps he'd be able to take a quick nap and regain his normal state of mind? Or maybe he could at least play a few games on his phone to distract himself. Angry birds or something... Upon strolling on into the room, he spotted Quinn's petite figure and nearly stopped in his tracks, eye shifting and wondering if he should leave before being noticed. No... he was a man. Not some girl who chickens out of slightly uncomfortable situations. Did he sound like a massagist, masonist...or whatever that word was, with that comment? He shrugged his shoulders finally and instead of sneaking his way out of the lounge, Finn lifted his head up high (possibly a little too high up) and confidently walked on over to Quinn, taking a seat near her. "Hey, what are you doing?" he asked casually, half-smiling at her. He’d just play it cool.

a dream is a wish yourheart makes when you're fast asleep
To Quinn, the day seemed like it was never going to end. Luckily she had made it through morning classes without too much difficulty, but it had been extremely hard for her to pay attention fully. Fortunately, she had been listening enough that she hadn’t missed the homework and didn’t look so dazed that she called. Zoning out in class wasn’t typically something that the blonde did, but for some reason she’d had a hard time falling asleep the previous night and she didn’t know why. It had happened last year when she’d been pregnant, but there was no way that she was again since she hadn’t been with anyone since then. Of course, Sam had tried to get to that point, but she’d stopped him. When she did, she was so afraid that he would pissed off and dump her on the spot for not putting out, but he had actually understood and told her that he would wait until she was ready. He had also assured her that he wouldn’t pressure her, and that their entire relationship wasn’t based off of that. That had been good news for Quinn since it was nice to not have a guy just talking to her to try and get into her pants. Of course, Finn hadn’t been that way either but she knew that he’d been frustrated with it. Either way, Quinn was pinning her inability to sleep on stress.
There was a lot going on right now and though she was used to it by now because of all the chaos getting pregnant had caused last year, she wished everything would just slow down. She was tired of listening to Coach Sylvester yelling at the Cheerios for not doing a routine well enough when it was actually close to perfect, and she was tired of big crowds. She was even getting a little tired of Mr. Schue and his Glee song choices, but that was more tolerable because he wasn’t actually yelling at them. Plus, she knew that he was stressed out too and wanted them to win Sectionals just as much as Quinn did. He was a great teacher in all honesty, and she felt like maybe sometimes she didn’t give him enough credit. However, despite that, Quinn still wanted life to come to a halt and let her breath for a while. She had just gotten over the whole pregnancy thing, and wanted nothing more than to life stress and chaos free for a bit. But, the life of a high school cheerleader – or any high school student, really – was never simple and easy like that; there was always something looming over their heads that needed to be taken care of.
With these bitter thoughts flowing through her mind, Quinn sighed in frustration and tried to blow her bangs out of her face. Once they weren’t obscuring her view anymore, she rearranged her textbook into a more comfortable position on her lap and tried to concentrate on the words in front of her. Unfortunately, the chapter was the opposite of what she had hoped it would be so far, and that wasn’t helping the whole concentration thing. Her pen hadn’t even moved yet because she was having so much trouble, and she wished that she knew where Sam was so she could be with him instead of sitting alone in the student lounge trying to get homework done. This was all part of her plan to go home and take a nap without worrying about finishing anything that was due tomorrow, however, so she was doing her best to force herself through it. The end of lunch bell would probably be going off soon, but until then she was determined to get at least something done, even if it was just something small. Reaching back to push her long hair back behind her ear, she rearranged her book again and zoned into the book. Her thoughts, however, were interrupted by footsteps walking into the lounge, accompanied by a familiar voice. When she looked up from her book, she saw Finn sitting in a chair close to her with a half-smile on his face. Suddenly feeling awkward, Quinn studied him for a moment before answering. “Homework,”
she responded, returning his smile. “I couldn’t find Sam when I got back from Starbucks so I decided to use the rest of lunch to get a head start on it.” It was then that she realized that Finn was alone, which automatically triggered an eyebrow raise. “Where’s Rachel?” she asked, genuinely curious since last Quinn checked Rachel Berry didn’t let her boyfriend go anywhere without her. - - - - - - - - - - He listened to Quinn’s explanation and merely nodded in response, not really sure of what to say about that. Taking off his backpack, Finn unzipped it before rummaging for a textbook or something to make it look like he came in with an actual purpose -- one that didn’t consist of sleeping and/or playing games on his phone. He’d look smart in front of Quinn... or something of that sort, but they had known each other for long enough to truly understand each other. She probably wouldn’t buy that he came in to study. That just wasn’t very characteristic of him. At her question, he simply shrugged his shoulders, wondering if people thought he and Rachel were attached to the hip or something. Well, technically, Rachel did constantly cling herself on to him, not that Finn actually minded much. Though sometimes he enjoyed having Finn time, time that didn’t consist of having to entertain his girlfriend. ”Probably... eating lunch?” He’d leave it at that, unsure if that answer made him out to be a bad boyfriend or something.
It wasn’t mandatory for boyfriends to constantly know where their girlfriends were, right? That seemed way too tiring and sure, Finn liked Rachel a lot, but not enough to monitor her or stick a tracking device on her. That all seemed way too stalkerish and complicated and that thought confused him. None of that was necessary and he doubted Rachel would even really expect that of him... Then again, she was a girl and girls tended to expect a lot out of guys... And this was Rachel they were talking about. She was like the epitome of high expectations and surely she’d expect him to come to her for once, and not because he had to, but because he wanted to. Whatever that meant, at least.
Sighing, Finn snapped himself out of his thoughts and decided to open a random book -- his Spanish book? Well, he needed to study that a bit anyway. ”Where’s Sam?” he asked, deciding to ask since he was a little curious as to why Quinn wasn’t with her boyfriend. But then he remembered that she had earlier explained that she hadn’t been able to find Sam, leading Finn to shake his head a bit before she could answer him. ”My bad, you already answered that,” he mumbled awkwardly, flipping a page of his textbook quickly, showcasing how uncomfortable he really was. Wait, why was he even uncomfortable? ”Uhh... I zoned out while you were talking, sorry.” Hoping that’d make up for his awkwardness, Finn offered a sheepish grin before glancing down at his textbook yet again. He tried skimming the page in front of him but all he really could make out was something about a donkey and his friend going to the bathroom... or asking about the bathroom? That’s what ‘banos’ meant, right? Maybe he really did need to start paying attention to Mr. Scheu teach because Finn was pretty sure that by this point, he should have already gotten a basic grasp of the Spanish language.
Well, to Finn’s defense, he had never really wanted to take Spanish in the first place, but the rest of the football team had deemed French to be a fruity language and Finn hadn’t really wanted to appear fruity in front of everyone. And Japanese never interested him -- he wasn’t one of those creepy guys who liked reading comic books that had girls with ridiculously large breasts. He preferred real breasts over huge fake knockers... they were kind of intimidating and sure, they weren’t too bad on the eyes, but still. The whole artificiality made them a tiny bit gross by his standards. So he was forced to take Spanish by process of elimination and it wasn’t too bad, seeing as how most of the football guys were in his class as well. Finn blinked a couple of times, realizing he had totally just thought about boobs while talking to Quinn. Had she even been saying anything? Because if she had, Finn seriously hadn’t been paying attention. So just in case, he grinned and nodded his head a few times, hoping that’d suffice.

a dream is a wish yourheart makes when you're fast asleep
Quinn couldn’t shake the awkward feeling that she had now that Finn had joined her. He wasn’t sitting particularly close to her, but he was close enough that she was reminded of old times when they’d sit in the exact same room while she tried her best to help him grasp whatever subject he was having difficulty in at the time. He wasn’t stupid by any means, but he had a tendency to zone out pretty easily when he was bored, which was what she blamed for his poorer grades. That was why, as his girlfriend back then, she had tried her best to help him out and it usually worked. She was patient enough to sit and explain everything to him until he understood and they had a good system that had worked well for them. She watched as he removed his backpack and dropped it to the floor, then unzipped it and took out his Spanish textbook. She had to admit that she was surprised that he was studying and didn’t really believe that had been his intention when he walked into the room and the selfish part of her was thinking that maybe he was still trying to impress her and look smart. This, however, was something she doubted since it wasn’t her that he had to impress anymore. Still, she admired him for at least trying to look like he hadn’t come in there to play a game on his phone like he usually did. She was about to comment on that, but his answer to her question about Rachel took her aback and she decided to address that surprise first. “And she didn’t make you stay with her? Is everything okay?”
It wasn’t meant to sound accusatory or anything, she was just genuinely curious. As she waited for him to respond to that, she looked down at the open textbook in his lap and smirked a bit. “Finn, you know don’t have to pretend you came in here to study just because I am. I know you’re probably dying to have your phone out playing that bird game,” she said, more to tease him then anything else. She may not have been his girlfriend anymore, but she still knew him and he was definitely not one to come into the student lounge and willingly study without someone making him. She was surprised that Rachel wasn’t cracking the whip on his grades since she was such a perfectionist herself, but she was probably too happy to actually have a boyfriend – and one on the football team, for that matter – to really care. Quinn herself had cared about Finn’s grades, but not because they kept him on the football team like most people liked to assume. No, she’d always been on him about his grades because she genuinely wanted him to succeed in school, not for her but for himself. Nobody seemed to understand that she wasn’t always thinking about popularity and social status, even though most of the time it was. He got quiet for a few minutes which meant he was probably thinking about something, then he asked about Sam’s whereabouts. Before she could answer, however, he had realized that he already asked her that when he first came in and quickly took it back. She watched as he flipped a page of the textbook lazily, and could tell just by that simple gesture that he was uncomfortable. “Alright, look,” she said with a sigh. “This is clearly making you uncomfortable so I’ll just leave.” Once the words had left her lips, Quinn slammed her textbook shut and started rummaging around in her own bag so she could put the notebook and textbook back inside. The last thing she wanted was an awkward run in with her ex boyfriend – one she still loved – to ruin either of their days. It didn’t help that they were completely alone in the room without their new significant others either. Quinn herself didn’t mind him being there despite feeling awkward about it since they hadn’t really talked since their break up, but since he was clearly not okay with the situation she decided to be the bigger person and walk away from it. His continuous nodding, smiling and blinking were telltale signs that he wasn’t okay with the situation; they had been habits she’d picked up about him over the few years they had dated, so she knew exactly how he was feeling most of the time just by looking at his face. Once she had gathered her things securely into her bag, Quinn got to her feet, hoisted her bag on her shoulder and took a step towards the door. “I guess I’ll just see you around,” she said, taking another step towards the door and not expecting him to stop her.
